08/23/2011 N.C. coastal evacuation plans and routes

  • When a storm is forecast, learn the evacuation route from your location and the amount of time needed to evacuate. Think about where you will go. If you need to go to a shelter. Most shelters do not allow pets, so decide how you will care for them.
  • If you live in a mobile home, plan to evacuate to a safer structure. No mobile or manufactured home is safe in hurricane-force winds.
  • Map out your evacuation route. Determine how long it will take to pick up everyone in your family, and notify other family members where you plan to be. Bring a three-day survival kit with you.
  • Learn the evacuation route from your location and the amount of time needed to evacuate.
     
  • Evacuation routes are marked with circular blue signs that state "Evacuation Route." Drivers should not stray from these routes. Law enforcement and emergency responders are paying attention to them first, and the routes go to areas where food, water and shelter are available.
     
  • For updates on road conditions and closures, call 511 toll-free or check out the North Carolina Department of Transportation's online Travel Information System. Information will also be posted on message boards along the evacuation routes.

Planning to Leave

  • Before you leave, turn off gas, water and electricity. Lock the door.
  • Take care of your pets. Public shelters might not take them.
  • Fill up your car with gas.
  • Take blankets, first-aid supplies, medicine, several days’ clothing and essential personal items to the nearest shelter.
     
  • Bring water and nonperishable snacks for the trip, because restaurants and gas stations might not be open.
     
  • Do not travel farther than necessary.
  • Return home only after authorities say it is safe to do so.

11/25/2010 How to Deter Christmas Thieves for 2010

A few general common-sense tips.

Do Not leave packages in vehicles! Especially in plain sight! Locked cars
are not a deterrent to a greedy thief!

Placing items in trunk , and going back for more is not wise. Some thieves watch for this, and will break a window to unlock trunks.

When wrapping packages, dispose of scraps of wrap and tubes(broken down),in Black trash bags. Thieves watch trash cans, and lots of tubes and scrap mean lots of goodies in the house!

Empty mailboxes often! Those lovely cards can and do disappear!
If going out change the light(s) you leave on. Regular routines are noticed.

Christmas morning, do not put large item boxes(stereos,computers,etc.)out at curb side. Break them down and dispose of discretely. This is a sure " Look what we got invitation and announcement. Believe it or not, these thieves watch for this, and may hit your house at a later date!

Tips & Warnings

Shop early in the day, and do so with a friend or family member.

Accept help from store employees, or ask for it if alone.

Do not carry large sums of cash.

Do not permit groups of "unknown" carolers in your home. They may be entering under false pretense.(checking out your home)

Do not carry a loose shoulder strap purse. Keep your purse closed!

Avoid dark parking lots, and dark parking garages! And last but not least, please don't drink and drive.

Covered for the Wilson's Mills Police Department has been extended to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with the addition of a fourth full time officer. As always, if you need a police officer, either day or night, call 911 to receive a quick response. Wilson's Mills Charity Ride. Funds donated to Johnston County Special Olympics with 10% to Civitan for operating expenses. Saturday August 28, 2010 starting at Ray Price Harley Davidson 1126 South Sanders St in Raleigh, NC and Ending at Wilson's Mills Elementary School Ballfield at 4654 Wilson's Mills Rd in Smithfield, N.C. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 11:00 am. Ride will begin at 11:00 a.m. Registration cost will be $20.00 for each bike and $10.00 for passenger. The Wilson's Mills Police Department assisted in a Autism Walk which was conducted from Durant Rd in Wilson's Mills, down Fire Department Rd to Main St, Back out on Wilson's Mills Rd and back to Fire Department Rd to Durant Rd. This walk was to bring awareness of the increase in Autism in our society.
